In general, we are as much a social club as a martial arts training gym. We get together several nights a week to learn self-defense (cool body movements and interesting body mechanics), get some exercise, occasionally do clinics and competitions, socialize and eat pizza. We also try not to take ourselves too seriously. Our club motto is: "never pass up an opportunity to look foolish" (it's deeper than it seems).
The social/club environment is enhanced because jujitsu requires working with a partner to learn and practice the arts/techniques. The techniques that we do are often inherently dangerous. To safely practice them, we have to take care of each other. The result is an environment where a bunch of people are willing to sacrifice their own safety to insure that the person that they are working with will not be injured.
The irony of jujitsu is that it is, in essence, a combat system originally intended for warfare and personal conflict but the practice of it instills trust and often friendship.
To ensure that Bozeman JuJitsu classes are safe, they are taught by black belt instructors who have been examined and certified by the American Judo & JuJitsu Federation. The AJJF black belt/instructor rank requires a course in ethics and first aid/CPR.
Our Senior instructor, Vern Brekke, is a Rokudan (6th degree black belt) who has over 40 years of teaching experience and a Masters Degree in Physical Education/Biomechanics.
